Wild V Standard
The first problem we encountered when growing strawberries was what kind we should grow. Wild strawberries are sweeter and often more hardy, but smaller than standard strawberries. We couldn’t decide, so we settled on half a bed of each.
Plant and Harvest
You should plant strawberries in early autumn, but you can buy live plants in spring from most garden centres. We are going to buy the live type, as it is too late to grow.
There is no particular harvest time for strawberries, but in late summer and early autumn, most of the berries should be red, and they can be picked.
We can say that they will need protection from birds and insects, via netting or crushed egg shells to deter slugs. Also, they need a fairly to full sun position which is fairly dry to stop rotting.
